General Election Rankings

State Senator Angela Paxton appeared to get a campaign for governor or another high-ranking statewide office during the weekend when she emerged as the covergirl for blind partisan loyalty during the weekend in a new ad that she made to boost the U.S. Senate bid for the husband who she's suing for divorce.

Paxton has reaped more attention than money could buy for a monologue that she delivers in the slick 30-second spot that was bankrolled by Texas PAC for the Senate Leadership Fund. Paxton tries to make the case that voters should forget about the individual candidates and their qualifications and base their votes exclusively in the upcoming midterm election on the party they favor instead.

The Collin County solon urges Texans to follow her lead and support the entire GOP ticket that Attorney General Ken Paxton, her spouse for almost 40 years, is leading with a Senate campaign that's desperate for all the help it can get. Paxton claims the new commercial gives her a chance to confront "the elephant in the room" before she dances around it and implies that she's voting for the spouse who cheated on her with other women without ever saying it directly or mentioning him by name.

"People have asked my thoughts about this election - and turns out - I have some," Paxton the senator says in the video that was bankrolled by Texas PAC with money controlled by the Senate Leadership Fund in Washington D.C.

"Let's talk about the elephant in the room," the AG's wife adds in the ad. "In a general election it's not as much about the individual players on the team. It's about getting the whole team across the finish line. Either we hold every Republican seat - or we hand the future of Texas to the other team. That's why I'm voting for the Republican ticket on November 3rd."

Paxton doesn't make any attempts in the advertisement to say why the father of her children would be a good U.S. senator for the nation's second largest state. She doesn't say a word about the state lawyer's character, integrity, record as the AG for nearly a dozen years or why he would do a better job representing Texas in the upper house of Congress than Democratic nominee James Talarico. She doesn't acknowledge Ken Paxton's existence in the Texas PAC commercial that leaves it to voters to extrapolate that she will back her estranged husband simply because he's on the ticket.

Talarico portrayed the Angela Paxton ticket plug as a symptom of the system he's taking on. "Asking Texans to close their eyes and vote for a political party instead of the best person for the job is exactly what’s wrong with today’s politics," Talarico said in a post on X on Sunday.

But Ken Paxton's supporters on the right are hailing Angela Paxton's ad as a bold and courage act of selflessness that's justified because it's for the greater good. It doesn't take a political science degree to understand that the senator's performance in the new advertisement is self-serving first and foremost as an apparent springboard for a statewide campaign in 2028 when most of the state's highest-ranking posts will be on the ballot again.

Angela Paxton's appearance in the Texas PAC spot will keep her in favor with a base that loves her husband - and it will help her dodge the blame for a Talarico win that looks more likely every day in a race that he's led in the polling for three entire months.

But the truth is, Paxton the state legislator has been a major drag on the Paxton campaign for Senate regardless of how she votes in the midterm election 29 days from now. So the Texas PAC spot gives Senator Paxton a chance to create the appearance that she's taking one for the team for the sake of her survival in a political world she may have never experienced if not for the name recognition she inherited from her husband when she won his former Senate seat in 2018 when he was seeking re-election for the first time as the state AG.

But after operating in her spouse's shadow for years, the AG's impeachment by Texas House Republicans in 2023 set the stage for a breakout by the legislator from Senate District 8. And Angela Paxton won rave reviews for a graceful performance under fire during a Texas Senate trial that ended with the attorney general's acquittal in a historic proceeding in which fellow Republicans barred her participation. Paxton stood by her man when he was being accused of corruption in connection with a scheme that had a mistress at its center. And then she dumped him when she filed for divorce last year on "biblical grounds" last year.

Paxton demonstrates in the new video that she has star power in an arena where that's become a rarity - especially among the Republicans in Texas. The new ad, which had gone by viral by sunrise, is an expensive next step that won't cost her a dime and should immunize her from the wrath of the right if her husband is out of work in January.

more to come ...
