Dan Patrick Gets Late Start
on Christian Salvation Push

Primary Runoff Fundraising

Capitol Inside
May 17, 2022

Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick issued a belated endorsement to Texas Railroad Commissioner Wayne Christian on Tuesday as conservatives scrambled frantically to try to prevent an all-time upset and embarrassment for the GOP with a primary runoff foe who raised more campaign cash in two days than he has in 16 months.

RRC challenger Sarah Stogner gave Christian and the GOP establishment cause to panic when she scored $2 million in two separate contributions in the past week from Ashley Wyatt - a Monahans rancher who's an official Houston resident.

Stogner, who bills herself as the Unicorn, had refused to accept donor support en route to a runner-up showing in the March 1 primary election with 15 percent of the vote. Christian came close to an outright victory in round one with 47 percent of the primary vote. The GOP aura of invincibility evaporated today when Stogner listed the second Wyatt donation of nearly $1.7 million on May 12 on the runoff report that she filed with the Texas Ethics Commission on Monday. Stogner filed a special report late last week that showed Wyatt giving her more than $300,000 the day before on May 11.

State Rep. Mayes Middleton of Galveston rallied behind Christian on the same day last week with an Twitter attempt to paint her a blue interloper. Middleton is one of Patrick's closest allies as the GOP nominee in an open state Senate race that the lieutenant governor orchestrated. But neither Middleton or Patrick had any flattering words for Christian with the endorsements amid the realization that the RRC was competitive in overtime despite the incumbent's 32 point lead in the first election.

"Vote for @ChristianForTX in the runoff, his opponent donated to Beto and voted for Democrats. She’s bad for Texas and wants liberal policies that will eliminate Texas jobs," Middleton tweeted.

Patrick said in a statement that he was proud to pitch his support behind Christian for a second term on the statewide elected panel that regulates the energy business in Texas. The lieutenant governor shifted the focus to himself in the second line of the Christian endorsement.

"I will continue to work with the industry and the Commission going forward to ensure Texas has a sustainable and reliable supply of energy as we take the necessary steps to ensure the reliability of Texas’ electric grid," Patrick said.

But Patrick borrowed a talking point from Stogner and Christian's other critics with a reference to one of the reasons that want to give him the boot from the RRC. "We must have more reliable power,” Patrick added.

Some establishment Republicans have been keeping their distance from Christian as a result of ethics questions that he's sparked with his own campaign fundraising and votes as a commissioner.

Governor Greg Abbott hasn't intervened up to now in the railroad commissioner bout between Christian and Stogner. But Christian has U.S. Senator Ted Cruz in his camp along with fellow current RRC Commissioners Christi Craddick and Jim Wright.

Christian has fielded endorsements from three Texas congressional Republicans including U.S. Rep. August Pfluger of Amarillo - one of the state delegation's rising stars. Three state Senate Republicans are backing Christian in round two as well.
